If you have very bad gum disease or other medical conditions that affect your gums, you may need periodontal treatment (often called ‘perio’ by dentists).
Gum disease (which can appear as bleeding, sore, and inflamed gums) usually clears up with good oral hygiene, but if left untreated it can develop into more serious conditions such as periodontitis.
You may need periodontal treatment if you have this condition, are at risk of developing it, or have other medical conditions that may affect your oral health. Periodontal treatment can help combat and manage the severe gum infections that can cause tooth loss or other health problems.
If you need this treatment, you will be offered a periodontal examination to assess your condition. During this examination, your dentist will carry out a thorough clinical assessment of your mouth and may take X-rays in order to plan and discuss your further treatment with you.
